Scientific Name: Muraena helena Size: 100 -150 cm Average Life Expectancy: 15 – 20 years

The Mediterranean Moray, which is known for its strong jaw and snake-like body, is a large moray species living in the Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic Ocean. It can reach up to 1.5 meters in length and 6.5 kg in weight. It generally lives in 100 - 300 meter deep waters, between alcoves and in rocky areas. Although the

Mediterranean Murray is sometimes seen as an aggressive species due to its appearance and sharp teeth, which may cause serious damage, it is a rarely attacking fish unless it feels threatened. It feeds on other fish, shellfish (shrimp, crabs etc.) and mollusks (such as calamari).

Not much is known about the reproductive habits of Mediterranean Morays. It is generally known that these fish leave their eggs in the water and after a while transparent larvae emerge.

The recorded longest lifetime of a Mediterranean Moray is 38 years.
