Poisonous frogs or phantasmal poison-arrow frogs is a group of 200 species, of which some are endangered. They generally live on trees, in ponds or streams in the rain forests of Central and South America. They do not only have a wide range of color combinations but are also known for being the most poisonous animals in the world. Each species of poisonous frogs has a poison of different chemical properties. One can contain enough poison to kill 10 people.

The size of poisonous frogs may vary from 1.5 - 5 cm. They weigh between 2-10 grams. They mostly feed on flies, ants and small grasshoppers.

The average life expectancy of a poisonous frog is 8-15 years.

  • In ancient times, the natives of the Choco tribe of Colombia dipped the arrows they used into the poisons of these frogs. This is where their name "poison-arrow frogs" comes from.
  • The colors of these frogs is not just for show, they send a warning to other predators.
  • Scientists believe that these frogs gain their poison through some of the bugs they eat.
  • Since they do most of their breathing through their skin, they also have to keep their skin moist.
